David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present Judy Chicago, Material Girl, a retrospective exhibition that provides a glimpse into five decades of the artist’s work in plastics, paper, needlework and glass. The exhibition will be presented at the first annual Palm Springs Fine Art Fair at the Palm Springs Convention Center, February 16-19, 2012.
Chicago, an artist, writer, educator and feminist, has explored nearly every artistic medium and communication device to speak on the behalf of and create opportunities for hearing women’s voices in the arts. Her multimedia art-making practice has included painting, drawing, sculpting and performing, incorporating a wide range of media. During the first decade of her career, she worked in a variety of non-traditional media and supports, including sprayed acrylic lacquer on sheets of acrylic as well as blown and painted domes. Throughout much of the artist's career, she has made prints, producing over 100 different works on paper using lithography, serigraphy, heliorelief, etching, aquatint and cast paper. Chicago has also designed for an array of needle and textile techniques and has pioneered combining them with painting and sculpture. Since 2003, the artist has been exploring the use of cast, fused and painted glass for expressive purposes, conveying a range of human emotions.
Chicago’s intellectual impact influences the art world as well as numerous social, political and academic causes. Internationally recognized as a pioneer and defender of the rights of women and anyone else who feels powerless against those with power, she has received much critical acclaim, not only for her artwork, but also her writing and educational efforts with numerous reviews, publications, awards and honorary degrees. Most recently, Chicago’s seminal and groundbreaking work that she produced in the 1970s while living and working in Los Angeles has been included in over 14 different exhibitions and performances of Pacific Standard Time, the Getty funded initiative. Chicago will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
David Richard Contemporary is located in downtown Santa Fe north of the historic plaza and specializes in Post-War American abstract art, featuring both historic and contemporary geometric, hard edged, Op, Pop, color field, minimal and gestural abstraction in a variety of media. The gallery represents many established mid to late-career artists who were part of important art historical movements and tendencies that occurred during the 1950s through the 1980s on both the east and west coasts. The gallery also represents estates, secondary market works, and several emerging artists.
