Mokha Laget’s ‘In Shape, In Color’ at David Richard Gallery, Santa Fe
Blouin ArtInfo, 08/28/2017
The exhibition titled “In Shape, In Color” featuring the works of Algerian artist Mokha Laget will be on view at David Richard Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The selection of works on display features vibrantly stained canvases that create an illusion of 3D structures floating in space. Utilizing Hans Hofmann's theory of push and pull and Josef Albers’ teachings on color interactions Laget pushes these further by combining the use of colorful hues. These were primarily used to create vibrational qualities and retinal experience by artists such as Julian Stanczak and Richard Anuszkiewicz. The series on display highlights illusory effects and at the same time establishes a tension between two-dimensional picture plane and three-dimensional space.
Mokha Laget is an Algerian artist who has spent her early childhood and life in countries such as North Africa, France, and the United States. She studied at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C. Her work has been exhibited for the last 30 years and has held several roles such as independent curator, art restorer, arts writer and was Curatorial Assistant at the New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts. She also studied at the Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and has been traveling to countries such as Africa, Latin America, and Asia as a simultaneous French interpreter for the past 25 years. Laget lives and works in New Mexico.
“In Shape, In Color” runs from September 8 through October 7, 2017, at David Richard Gallery, 1570 Pacheco Street, Suite A1, Santa Fe, NM 87505, United States.
