David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present FUTURE NATURAL, a solo exhibition of new work by Beverly Fishman and the gallery’s inaugural exhibition. Fishman’s artistic practice comments on medical data becoming an increasing part of our identities and our growing reliance on medications to make us look, feel and perform better.
FUTURE NATURAL consists of two bodies of work in which the physicality and materiality, in terms of scale and experience, are an important aspect of the exhibition. In the front gallery, fourteen paintings consist of psychedelic optical patterns of layered medical data, silkscreened in fluorescent-colored acrylic and enamel paint onto polished stainless steel. Four larger-than-life narrow verticals are hung low to the ground allowing us to see our entire reflections like a mirror through the barrage of medical data. Four larger horizontals are diptychs or triptychs, approximately 56 to 58 inches in height and 84 inches in length, enable the reflections of multiple viewers to be captured and comingled with the data. The six smaller pieces capture just the head of the viewer.
In the gallery’s project room, Fishman has installed 70 pill-shaped wall sculptures in what looks like the residue from a fist-full of pills that were thrown into the room and stuck to the walls. These pill sculptures are made of resin and phosphorescent pigments that glow in the dark. One’s favorite crutch will be recognized and the glow in the dark feature only enhances the soothing and lulling effect.
Beverly Fishman received her MFA from Yale University in 1980. Currently, she lives in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan where she has been Artist-in-Residence and Head of Painting at Cranbrook Academy of Art since 1992. Fishman has had nearly two-dozen one-person exhibitions since 2000 at galleries in New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Thessaloniki, Chicago, St. Louis, and Los Angeles. Her work has also been included in many thematic exhibitions addressing abstraction, technology, medicine, and the body. She was just awarded the Hassam, Speicher, Betts, and Symons Purchase Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2010). Her work may be found in many public and corporate collections including the Toledo Art Museum, the Miami Art Museum, the Columbus Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Arts, the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, Cranbrook Art Museum, the Kresge Art Museum, Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation for Art, United Nations Embassy in Istanbul, Hallmark, Inc., UBS Financial Services Inc. and Daimler-Chrysler Corporation.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color catalog and essay by Kathy Battista.
David Richard Contemporary is located in downtown Santa Fe north of the historic plaza. The gallery offers a range of important contemporary art with an emphasis on abstraction in a variety of media by established and emerging American and international contemporary artists.
