Angela Johal’s paintings are bold, dynamic hard-edged compositions that are alive with energy and movement. Inspired by rhythms and music, they seem to capture a sense of aural compositions’ patterns and flows. But they also recall key eras in postwar abstraction such as Op Art and midcentury modernism. “Music, like painting, reaches within to react directly upon the emotions,” she states. “Color vibrates for me on the canvas just like music does in my ears.” Her solo exhibition You Hear the Colours continues through Oct. 27.
