My work alludes to the dynamics of duality; the interplay of matter and energy, the spiritual and physical, emotion and intellect. It is simultaneously about the glory and drama of creation, and the intellectual fascination with its parts and how they relate to create a whole.
One of the ways I find of expressing this interplay is by compounding complexes of patterned color into synergistic wholes. Color and pattern are so primal to our history and survival that I think they touch the parts of us that are archetypal, rooted in nature, and infinitely curious. I employ abstraction and minimalism as ways to bypass the literal and go directly to metaphor, emotion, and the ineffable. At the same time, like classical music which integrates intellect and emotion, the works are based in structure, rhythm, and a form of logic.
The works are often associated with music, energy fields, quantum and string theory, weaving, land and seascape, genetics, etc. However, I don’t want to limit the viewers imagination.
I refer to the works as paintings, but they are made of tens of thousands of solid bits of colored acrylic plastic glued together, sanded and polished. They are laminated into cohesive panels through an intensive process of layering slicing, and reassembly. This process is followed by wet sanding and polishing.
To me the material is simply paint, but in solid form, and my “brushes” are the band saw, table saw, and glue.
Material Distillation, Eric Zammitt exhibition at David Richard Gallery, includes a selection of paintings and sculptures made of acrylic plastic. More specifically, they are comprised of thousands of individual square pieces of cut acrylic plastic in various combinations and arrays that, when assembled and polished, create spectacular geometric patterns, rhythms and abstract imagery. Beyond the physicality and process of Zammitt’s paintings and sculptures, his art making practice is more about color, light and energy, not only from formal perspectives, but to evoke a sense of nature and one’s emotions and spirituality.
Eric Zammitt has had many solo exhibitions and his work included in numerous group exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Riverside, Houston, Santa Fe and Pusan, Korea. His artwork is in many private and public collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Museum of Art and History, Lancaster, CA. Recently, he completed a commission of a permanent four-story window installation created for Community Redevelopment Agency with Meta Housing Corporation for the Adams/Central Mixed Use Development, Los Angeles, CA. His exhibitions have been reviewed in the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, Coagula Art Journal and THE Magazine.
