Vivian Springford
Biography:
(1914-2003)
Vivian Springford died in 2003. Many consider her most important paintings to be her “Black Paintings” done in the late 1950s and early 1960s, as they come out of an era famous for the Abstract Expressionism of such artists as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.
Part of the elegance in Springford’s work comes out of her early embrace and study of Oriental art and calligraphy, facilitated by her friendship with the Asian artist Walasse Ting. From her early powerful Black Paintings series, to her later mystical stain paintings, Vivian Springford has created an extraordinary body of work that is being honored in the art world of today.
