Statement:

I have been painting in New York City since 1965 when I received a B.S. degree from New York University with a major in painting. In 1968 I received an M.A. degree from Hunter College, completing my thesis with Tony Smith which was a series of paintings.

In 1972 my work was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Biennial Exhibition. In the following years, I had several solo exhibitions. In 1973 Gene Baro invited me to have a solo exhibition of paintings at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In 1974 I had a solo exhibition at the Fischbach Gallery in New York City. In 1977 my work was exhibited in a one person show at the Art Fair in Cologne, Germany.

I was invited to have a one-person show at The Clocktower in New York City in May 1979. This year I also received a National Endowment Grant. I was invited to join the Willard Gallery in New York City and in 1980 had a debut solo exhibition there. Barbara Rose included me in the exhibition American Painting: The 80s, at the Grey Art Gallery in New York University. This show was reviewed by Hilton Kramer for the Sunday Edition of the New York Times. My painting was reproduced in the review. Outside of New York, I also had a solo exhibition with the Dart Gallery in Chicago, and during the month of April I had paintings on exhibit at the Grand Palais in Paris in a group exhibition organized by the Socie?te? des Artistes Inde?pendants.

In 1981 one of my works was included in another edition of the Whitney Museum’s Biennial Exhibition at. During the month of February, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Gallery exhibited my pastel drawings and a large painting, Kabba. I was also commissioned by the Lincoln Center Vera List Fund to create a poster. In October 1982, I had a one-person exhibition of paintings at the Willard Gallery in New York City. This year I had a drawing show at the Nina Freudenheim Gallery in Buffalo, New York.

In 1983 I had a solo show at the Dart Gallery in Chicago. Shortly before, John, Yau a poet and art critic, wrote an article on my work that was published in Arts Magazine, September 1983. I received a National Endowment Grant in Painting. In 1984, my work was exhibited in a group show organized by Michael Walls, called Heroic-Poetic. My paintings were also shown in a group show curated by John Yau entitled Luxe Calme et Volupte, at 1 Penn Plaza, New York.

In May of 1985, I had a one-person exhibition at the Graham Modern Gallery in New York. Berta Walker, the director of the Gallery, arranged to make a catalog for my exhibition with four-color reproductions and a critical essay written by John Yau. Stephen Westfall wrote an article on my painting which was published in Art in America Magazine in December 1985

2

In 1986 I received the Prix de Rome Fellowship in Painting from the American Academy in Rome. For two years, I had a studio in Rome (1986-1988). This lead to an exhibition in 1988 at the Graham Modern Gallery in New York City, called The Rome Paintings – a curated show of the work I produced in Italy. Also in 1986 I received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant for Painting, and I had a one-person exhibition at the Ruth Bachofner Gallery in Los Angeles, California.

During May 1989, I had another solo exhibition at the Ruth Bachofner. In the summer of 1989 the Brooklyn Museum acquired a painting of mine for their permanent collection. November through December 1990, I had a one-person exhibition at the Graham Modem Gallery in New York City. These paintings were influenced by my travels in Italy, Sicily and Tunisia during the time of the Prix de Rome Fellowship. The art historian Ann Dumas wrote a review of this exhibition published in Arts Magazine. I have included this review along with an announcement from the Graham Modern show in my application.

In 1993 I received a grant for painting from Altos De Chavo?n in the Dominican Republic. The grant was for three months during the Summer. I was included in the group exhibition Los Artistas.

In 1998 I had a retrospective exhibition of twenty-seven years of my work at Museo Voluntariado De Las Casas Reales, Casa de Bastidas, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The exhibition was sponsored by the communications company Codetel, a subsidiary of GTE. Art In America published a review of the exhibition written by Richard Vine, a New York art critic, that same year in June. During the months of April and May of 1998 the retrospective exhibition traveled to Santiago and was shown at Museo Patronato Plaza de La Cultura Santiago Apostol. During this year R.B. Stevenson Gallery in La Jolla, California included my work in two group exhibitions. One was called Illuminated Under White Light. In February, March and April of 2000 I had a second retrospective exhibition of my painting at Museo de Las Americas in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. An eighteen-page catalogue in full color was made for the show with an essay by Stephen Westfall and one essay by Manuel Alvarez Lezama, an art critic from Puerto Rico.

In October 2000, my painting was included in a group exhibition at the Painting Center in New York City called Straight Painting. The essay for the brochure was written by Robert C. Morgan. In January of 2001 my work was also included in a group exhibition at Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery at the Hofstra Museum, Long Island, New York. The catalogue for this show was written by Robert C. Morgan. He also wrote the essay in the

3

catalogue for my one-person exhibition at the Andre Zarre Gallery in Chelsea, New York. The show was reviewed by Edwardo Marceles in the Newspaper Hoy, in Spanish.

In January 2002, I received the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant in painting. In December 2003, I was invited to exhibit my work at the Biennale Internazionale Dell'Arte Contemporanea, Florence, Italy. During the biennial, the gallery Alessandro Bagnai in Florence, Italy showed my work in a group show. In January 2005, I had a solo exhibition at Chris Winfield Gallery in Carmel California. My work was also included in the show entitled Contemporary Women Artists: New York at Indiana State University. In 2005 I also had a one-person exhibition at gallery Klaus Steinmetz Arte Contempora?neo, San Rafael de Escazu, Costa Rica.

In 2010 and 2013 I had two solo exhibitions at Sideshow Gallery in Williamsburg Brooklyn. There was a catalog made for each of these shows with essays by critics Robert C. Morgan and Stephen Westfall. A biographer Peter Falk also wrote an essay and used photos that Hans Namuth had taken of myself painting in the studio. These shows were reviewed in the New York Times, Art In America, Art News and The New Criterion. The essays and reviews are on my website: www.joanthorne.com.

In 2014 my paintings were exhibited in the Art Hamptons Fair by the Hollis Taggart Gallery. In 2015 the National Arts Club exhibited my work in the show called Outside the Lines/Modernist Drawings. In 2015 my pastels were shown as a one person show in the National Arts Club in New York City, called Black and White Into Color.
