David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present an exhibition of new abstract paintings on small rectangular wooden boxes by Richard Roth. The simple, geometric compositions wrap around and cover each of the side surfaces, blurring the boundary between painting and object. Some of the paintings are quite optical and illusory—enhanced by the matte surfaces and three-dimensional shapes—while others are more reductive and minimal. Each composition seems like a fragment of a puzzle or scrapbook with modernist tendencies and hint of something familiar.

Richard Roth has had numerous solo exhibitions and his work included in many group exhibitions, nationally and internationally, in New York, Chicago, Richmond, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Haarlem (The Netherlands), Sydney (Australia), London (England) and Paris (France), among other cities. His artwork can be found in many private and public collections, including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbs, OH), Monroe Collection (Richmond, VA) and New York University Art Collection (New York, NY), among others. Roth currently lives in Oilville, VA and teaches painting at Virginia Commonwealth University, School of the Arts.
