David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present Tower, Lobby, Floor, an exhibition of new paintings by Matthew Penkala. This new work is somewhere between photography and non-objective abstract painting. Penkala plays with light and glare, the familiar and abstract with hard-edges and diffuse borders using his masterful airbrush techniques, subtly blending colors and creating narrow spectra and an inescapable depth that provides an illusion of altered space and time - perhaps more of a continuum between finite and infinite. The color palette, fragmented shapes and blinding spheres of light make each painting exciting and seductive, along with intriguing titles - “Won’t Be This Way Very long,” “Moving Out Of Orbit,” “Frequency Wires,” and “Pale Imitation” – that beg the viewer to engage and consider an alternate viewpoint.

Penkala received his BFA in Photography from Arizona State University and MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has had several solo exhibitions and his artwork included in many group exhibitions in Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Detroit and Phoenix. Penkala’s work is included in numerous private and public collections. He lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an on-line catalog with an essay by David Pagel.
