Dimitri Kozyrev, Lost Landscapes

David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present Lost Landscapes, a solo exhibition of abstract landscape paintings by Dimitri Kozyrev surveying his work from four different series painted this past decade. Paintings from the Lost Landscape, Black Square and 99.999 series are based upon the landscapes that we view from our peripheral vision while driving on the open road at high speeds with eyes focused on the road. Kozyrev explores the interaction between the disjointed parts that we actually see and the blanks that are filled in by our memories through his use of fragmented elements of the landscape, minimal details and distortions of figure and ground relationships and color. The effect is the visual and mental blur that we see while motoring down the freeway. Paintings in the newest series, Lost Edge, address the scars of war on the landscape and the regeneration of the land and thus, the self-healing and erasing the memory of the regimes that inflicted the wounds. Kozyrev again uses fragmentation, but in a more sharp and jagged way as a metaphor for the slashing of war. Modernist architecture and its ruin is prevalent in this series to reflect man’s hand in such devastation, along with a simple color pallet of black, white, red and green.
