David Richard Gallery is pleased to present, Oli Sihvonen, Small Works From 1963 to 1986: Studies on Canvas and Panel, the gallery’s third solo exhibition for the artist. The presentation examines Sihvonen’s small studies on unstretched canvas and Masonite panels that span his major painting series, including: Ellipses, 3 x 3 and 4 x 4 series of striped paintings, Ladder paintings and his last series that was a composite of all of the previous formal compositional elements—as noted above—that he felt finally achieved his career-long objective of conveying motion in painting on a two-dimensional canvas. There are 18 studies included in the presentation: eight on Masonite that span the 1960s through the 1980s, nine paintings on small pieces of unstretched canvas mostly from the 1970s, and one study of acrylic paint on paper from 1989 that was a proposal for a large painting in the lobby of the IBM headquarters in New York.
