Lara Evans (Associate Professor of Art History, Institute of American Indian Arts) and Susan York (Artist, former President’s Chair in Art, SFUAD) will lead a salon to discuss works in the Santa Fe Project at David Richard Gallery. This group exhibition of local artists is the first in a rotation of collaboratively curated exhibitions.  Evans and York will lead a dynamic and insightful interchange with the audience to decode and further understand works in the exhibition focusing on artists Caley Dennis, Drew Lenihan, and Kade Twist..

Lara Evans is a scholar, artist, curator, and an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. She earned her PhD in art history at the University of New Mexico in 2005, specializing in contemporary Native American art. Dr. Evans has been faculty at the Institute of American Indian Art since 2012 and was tenured faculty at The Evergreen State College between 2005-2013.  She currently runs the IAIA Artist-in-Residence program, which will bring 15 Native and First Nations to campus for one-month residencies during the Academic Year 2016-17.  

Susan York makes drawings, sculpture, installations and prints that often examine phenomenology and transitions between 2D and 3D. York’s sculpture and drawings are exhibited internationally most recently at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and James Kelly Contemporary. Her work is in renowned collections including the Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn, NY), Panza Collection (Lugano, Switzerland), and the Beinecke Library, Yale University (New Haven, CT). She has lectured and taught at Harvard University, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cranbrook Academy of Art.  Susan York received her MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. York is the former President’s Chair in Art at Santa Fe University of Art & Design and now a full time artist.
