DOUG EDGE

David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present, On The Edge, an exhibition of new paintings in cast plastic by Doug Edge. These new works are smaller than many of Edge’s earlier larger works. The sizes range from 12 x 16 inches to 24 x 19 inches, but they are still packed full of wit and satire, as well as cultural and political critique. The colors are vibrant and flowing, creating abstract compositions with hints of figuration and the occasional surprise that evoke titles such as Larry, Mo and Curly, Nuclear Family, Srooms and Father Son and Holy Spirit. These paintings are roughly half an inch thick that are mounted and sitting slightly slanted “on the Edge” of a metal support so that light passes through the clear, non-colored spaces to extend the composition with shadows on the wall behind. Like many of Edge’s earlier resin pieces, they are painterly yet have a three-dimensional quality that plays with the tension between illusionistic painting and literalness of sculpture.

Doug Edge is a Los Angeles-based artist who has worked in many different media, including painting, photography and sculpture. He has had numerous solo exhibitions and his work included in group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Seattle and New Orleans, as well as internationally in London, UK and Fossato Di Vico, Italy. His artwork has been featured in ARTFORUM, Art In America, ARTnews, and Los Angeles Times and is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, Oakland Museum of Art, Laguna Museum of Contemporary Art and Frederick Weisman Collection, as well as many private and corporate collections.
